VIDEO: Louth couple married for 50 years explain why they support marriage equality

Brighid and Paddy from Dundalk have been married for 50 years - so they know a thing or two about marriage.

In this touching video from VoteWithUs.org, the couple explain why they will be supporting the same-sex marriage referendum in May.

Paddy says that his opinion has changed over time and describes how his experience fighting for civil rights in the North has influenced his decision:

“Twenty years ago, I probably would have voted ‘No’, but now that I know gay people and see the love and joy they can bring to life, I will be voting ‘Yes’. We worked hard for civil rights in Northern Ireland in the Sixties. Now it is time to support civil rights in the South.”

The couple are devout Catholics and Brighid believes it is the right thing to do:

“We have the opportunity to change things, for the better. I know that the ever-loving God that we believe in will say, we did the right thing and the Christian thing by voting yes for marriage equality.”
