Rangers chairman David Murray has warned fans they will be banned from all away games if they fail to stamp out sectarian behaviour.
A proposal not to take tickets for away matches in Europe was mooted in the aftermath of the UEFA Cup tie against Osasuna, when footage of supporters apparently singing sectarian songs was posted on the internet.
The latest incident came less than a year after Rangers were fined £13,000 (€19,000) by UEFA for discriminatory chanting in a Champions League tie at Villarreal.
The club and fans’ groups yesterday launched a “self-policing” initiative in a bid to eradicate the problem but, if that fails, Murray is prepared to stop fans even from attending grounds in Scotland.
He told the Daily Record: “There is a fear we could end up banned from Europe but in the modern world past behaviour is unacceptable and we acknowledge there is a problem and we are trying to eradicate it as soon as possible.
“The vast majority of decent fans are now prepared to put their heads above the parapet and we are all saying this is not good enough.
“If it doesn’t improve, we will be punished. I think three strikes and we will be out of Europe completely.
“Because of that, we’d consider not only not taking tickets to away European games, but maybe not to domestic games also.”
