Hearts tonight made a grovelling apology to linesman Andy Davis and referee Hugh Dallas on behalf of winger Saulius Mikoliunas after the club’s night of shame.
The 20-year-old Lithuanian confronted Davis in a rage at his decision to award Rangers a stoppage-time penalty at Tynecastle last night, from which Fernando Ricksen stepped up to secure a 2-1 victory for Rangers.
The Scottish Football Association are expected to severely punish Mikoliunas but the club have moved quickly to write a letter of apology to the Scottish Premier League, Davis and Dallas while condemning the player’s actions.
In a statement, chairman George Foulkes said: “Mikoliunas is an exceptional young man who is making his way in a new career in another country and he’s made a terrific impact with the football staff at the club.
“His actions and manner of his approach to Mr Davis were totally out of character but were also totally unacceptable to the club.
“The club believes that whilst there was intention on behalf of the player to confront Mr Davis he allowed himself to be caught up in the emotion of the occasion and his momentum forced him to make contact with the official.”
