Harney to challenge risk equalisation injunction in High Court today

Lawyers for the Department of Health are to go to the High Court today to try and overturn an injunction which is preventing the introduction of risk equalisation.

Lawyers for the Department of Health are to go to the High Court today to try and overturn an injunction which is preventing the introduction of risk equalisation.

The injunction was granted last week after the Tánaiste Mary Harney announced that the process would be introduced in the health insurance market on January 1.

Risk Equalisation in the Irish market would involve the health insurers BUPA and Vivas, which have a lower-risk customer base, making huge payments to the VHI, which has older and higher-risk customers, to balance the market.

BUPA sought and secured an injunction to prevent the Minister for Health from implementing the change until February 7 at the earliest.
