Gardaí in Waterford have launched a murder investigation after a post mortem on the body of a woman found yesterday revealed that she died a violent death.

The body of 54-year-old Mary Walsh was found in the boot of her car on Cathal Brugha Street at lunchtime yesterday. She is believed to have suffered neck and facial injuries.

Ms Walsh had been reported missing from her home in Lemybrien on Monday.

Gardaí said they were hoping to speak to a man who was apparently with her on that day.

Reports this morning said detectives had also sealed off a house close to Ms Walsh’s home pending forensic examination.

It emerged today that Ms Walsh had €10,000 in her possession at the time of her disappearance.

She was apparently on her way to deposit the money in a bank on behalf of the insurance company she worked for.
