USI calls for major investment in Youth Guarantee scheme

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is appealing to the Labour party to ensure funding for the Youth Guarantee Scheme is secured.

Under the scheme, which is part funded by the EU, education and training is provided for those out of work and aged under 25.

Recent Eurostat figures show Ireland's rate of youth employment is 30.8%.

President of the USI, John Logue, said tackling the issue is a chance for Labour to redeem its position in the coalition.

"This could be a real turning point in their relationship in the coalition government," Mr Logue said.

"The Eurostat figures show that Ireland’s unemployment rate for under 25s is almost 7% worse than the European average.

"To combat the growing dangers associated with long term unemployment among young people, meaningful Government investment is required in a Youth Guarantee scheme that restores a sense of pride and hope in our young people.

"Too many are standing in dole queues and too many are forced to emigrate when they would rather stay at home and contribute to the country’s recovery."
