A 64-year-old pedestrian has died after he was struck by a car in Co Laois last night.

A 64-year-old pedestrian has died after he was struck by a car in Co Laois last night.

The man was seriously injured in the accident which occurred at around 8.30pm on the N80 at Dysart, Portlaoise.

He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and removed to Portlaoise General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, a man in his 50s, was uninjured.

A stretch of the N80 between Stradbally and Bloomfield is currently closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are due to examine the scene this morning. The Coroner has been notified.
