The new Internet Neutral Exchange [INEX] in the Data Electronics Data Centre was officially lit up by Mary O'Rourke, Minister for Public Enterprise yesterday.
The centre is supported by managed services provider, Keytech.
INEX is a facility to allow Internet Service Providers and carriers to interconnect within Ireland and to exchange traffic locally.
This service manages internet traffic locally rather than the costly rout of sending Ireland-to-Ireland destined packets through international routes.
This is designed to improve connectivity speeds and the new facility should increase Ireland-to-Ireland internet traffic significantly, with speeds of up to 155 megabytes per second, or STM-1.
Irish company Data Electronics won the contract to manage INEX earlier this year, and since then has invested heavily in new managed service facilities to develop the INEX facility.
Data Electronics, which offers end-to-end solutions for outsourcing elements of IT business from consultancy to hosting, co-location and managed services, currently has 8 centres operational throughout Ireland
