Racing: Ruby Walsh to defy foot and mouth advice

Grand National winner Ruby Walsh is defying the Government's advice and is to race at Cheltenham next week.

His move comes as fears rise about the number of Irish people travelling to sporting events still on in Britain despite the foot and mouth outbreak there.

The Walsh yard has confirmed that the jockey is travelling and will ride the Paul Nichols trained See More Business in the prestigious Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Walsh was originally down to ride his father Ted's mount Comanche Court, but with the banning of the movement of Irish horses, Walsh became open to other offers, and looks set to defy Government advice that people do not travel abroad.

The news comes on the day that the World Cross Country Championships have been moved from Dublin to Brussels because of the foot and mouth crisis.

The Football Association of Ireland has cancelled all weekend fixtures following consultation with the Department of Agriculture and the Irish Rugby Football Union meet this afternoon with the Department and it is expected that the forthcoming Ireland-England match will be postponed.
