Gardaí investigating the murder of Limerick man Shane Geoghegan have raided a number of houses in the city this morning.

The operation began before dawn and is concentrated in the Hyde Road and Ballinacurra Weston areas.

Mr Geoghegan, a 28-year-old Garryowen rugby player, was gunned down near his home in the early hours of Sunday morning after apparently being mistaken for a drug dealer who lives in the area.

The killing is being blamed on one of the criminal gangs involved in the long-running feud that has claimed several lives in Limerick in the past decade.
