New map pinpoints Dublin's hidden treasures
Dublin traders unveiled a new map today pinpointing the best of the capital’s hidden gems and homegrown hotspots.
The free city map and trail aims to take visitors and locals off the beaten tourist track to explore the area surrounding the bustling South Great George’s Street.
Among the attractions highlighted along the 2.4-mile route are the George’s Street Arcade, the nearby Doll’s Hospital and the Whitefriar Street Church housing the remains of St Valentine.
The map, devised by the George’s Street Business Association (GSBA), also recommends a climb up the Forty Steps tucked behind Dublin Castle – an attraction which could prove confusing for number-crunching visitors.
The steps, built for defending soldiers after Robert Emmet’s failed 1803 rebellion, in fact total just 39.
GSBA chairman David Baker said the mystery of the extra step could be easily explained.
“It might be that whoever named it counted the pavement you step on to after the 39th step,” he said.
“Whatever the reason, they’re an important part of the map and we’re proud to have them on it.”
Mr Baker claimed the new trail stood out from the raft of other tourist guides available.
“If you go to most cities in Europe you walk down through the main shopping thoroughfare and you see the same names and corporate brands.
“George’s Street is full of interesting independent retailers and terrific architecture that forms a key part of the character of Dublin.”
The map will be available in shops and hotels throughout the city centre. It will also be handed out on the streets by staff from the Dublin City Business Improvement District organisation.
