A device that stops energy being wasted by gadgets left on standby was launched today in the UK.

The plug adapter comes with its own remote control which cuts off power at the mains.

Its aim is to stop energy being wasted by red standby lights being left on after televisions and other electrical goods have been turned off.

Stereos, DVD players and other devices can also be plugged in as well as TVs.

Laura Yates, climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace, said: “Standby’s got to go, but in the meantime it’s great news that these energy saving plug adapters are now available.”

The SMJ Energy Saving Plug Adapter goes on sale at selected Currys stores from today for £9.99

(€14).

Currys is also in negotiations to launch a similar device which featured on the BBC television series Dragons’ Den.
