Health Minister Mary Harney is reportedly planning to dramatically increase the role of private businessmen in the health service.

Reports this morning said Ms Harney had hired consultants to devise a strategy to attract private investors into the service.

The reports said the Minister believed such investment would ease pressure on accident and emergency departments, which have been suffering from chronic overcrowding over the past three years.

Ms Harney is also reportedly planning to spend €5.2m this year on a plan to transfer up to 500 “clinically fit” patients out of hospital and into their own homes in an effort to alleviate the A&E crisis.
