Web hosting services company Worldport is to close its Dublin operations with the loss of 89 jobs.

Worldport is a provider of managed internet infrastructure solutions for global companies.

In Europe, it has internet solution centres in Dublin , London, Stockholm and Frankfurt.

Launched here in October, 2000, Worldport had intended Dublin to be its European headquarters, employing around 200 people.

In June, 15 jobs were cut in the company which said it was cutting the jobs to reduce duplications in the workforce, following the acquisition of UK web hosting firm Hostmark.

"This decision came after a review of the business activities, the current market opportunities and the strategic options for the company,'' says Kathleen Cote, CEO of Worldport.

"While we are encouraged by the opportunities we see in our market, we can not continue to operate at the current expense levels.

"We must make a fundamental change in the business structure to focus our efforts on the most significant near-term market opportunities and align expenses with a more conservative plan for growth.

"Market growth rates, economic and industry conditions will dictate expansion in the future.''

"Over the next month we will proceed with the orderly shutdown of our Dublin operation. In that process we will assure that we successfully transition our customers and minimize any disruption to their businesses.''
