The Government today launched an online ‘‘name-and-shame’’ campaign to improve food hygiene.

The Food Safety Authority (FSA) said businesses forced to close because of breaches of health regulations would be listed on its web site - www.fsa.ie.

The names will stay on the site for three months after the date the business involved is confirmed to be safe again.

More than 40 premises have been closed for health reasons in the Republic since the start of the year.

FSA chief executive Dr Patrick Wall said: ‘‘Those businesses that have serious breaches of the law and put their customers’ health at risk will face closure and have their names highlighted.

‘‘If it takes a name-and-shame approach to bring such operators into line, then so be it.’’
