Firms 'fleecing customers' by sending paper bills

The Consumers Association of Ireland has said that some companies are fleecing their customers, by charging them for paper billing.

It follows reports that people paying their bills online can save up to €400 a year.

The Irish Independent found that some firms charge €40 a year to send out paper bills.

Deputy Chairman of the CAI Michael Kilcoyne said that the public is being overcharged for some services.

"There are many service providers who actually use the opportunity to fleece their customers," he said.

"They charge their customers over and above what is reasonable.

"The cost of a stamp is 68c. If you're in business, generally, it's a couple of cents less, and they use this opportunity to really fleece their customers."
