Taoiseach rejects criticism of record on street crime

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has insisted that the Government is working to tackle the growing problem of street crime.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has insisted that the Government is working to tackle the growing problem of street crime.

The matter was raised in the Dail today by Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan, who listed a series of assaults throughout Ireland in recent weeks which have left a number of young men in a critical condition.

Mr Ahern, however, said: "At night, there still are those people who randomly attack, assault and injure young people. That is a feature of our modern society which the minister’s latest legislation is directed towards."
