Greencore is moving ahead with its €500m plans to redevelop the former sugar plant in Mallow, County Cork and have appointed a leading businessman to head up the massive project.
Redmond O’Donoghue has been named as chairman of the Mallow West Development Board, who will oversee the multi-million plans — which is the largest integrated project ever proposed for north Cork.
The redevelopment of the site, proposed by Greencore would include the creation of 1,000 jobs in enterprise, technology and commercial zones.
Mixed sport and recreational amenities on 149 acres, the provision of a 45-acre wildlife conservation area and the development of residential units are also planned.
Mr O’Donoghue is a non-executive director and former chief executive of Waterford Wedgwood plc. He is chairman of the governing body of Waterford Institute of Technology and a former chairman of both Bord Fáilte — now Fáilte Ireland — and the Marketing Institute of Ireland.
In his role as chairman, Mr O’Donoghue will liaise with both the public and private investment communities and local interests to deliver a plan for the enterprise aspects of Mallow West.
An integral part of that will be the creation of options to deliver Mallow as the business tourism hub for North Munster.
He said that he was delighted to have the chance to take part in such a unique project.
“This represents an unrivalled opportunity for Mallow and North Cork to create significant employment in a properly planned mixed use re-development,” he added.
