A Friesian heifer and some Jimmy Choos - family has plans for Lotto winnings

A delighted Galway family collected their €500,000 win from National Lottery offices in Dublin today.

The ticket was purchased in Newsround, Main Street, Ballyhaunis Co. Mayo for last Saturday’s Lotto Plus 1 draw. The ticket was a €5 Quickpick play, purchased in Newsround on the day of the draw.

The lucky family, who wish to keep their identity private, told Lottery staff they were “thrilled to bits and over the moon” with the win.

“We’re definitely not whinging about this prize,” said a family member.

“Divided between all of us, it’s a very manageable amount of money. We’ll use it to buy new(er) cars and have some really lovely holidays this summer.”

Another family member from the light-hearted group said he intended to “buy a Friesian heifer, preferably in calf”, while his sister chimed in: “’m buying Jimmy Choos, a few pairs. And a designer handbag – but not in leather. Don’t want to be upsettin’ the bovine fraternity across the table!”

The family always play together “because we get on so well. We normally play our own numbers but when one of us moves out of Galway, we play Quickpick, which is what happened here on a daytrip to Mayo.

“We all voted this morning before we left. But we’re all giving our Number 1 to the Lotto Plus game. Power to the players’, laughed the group as they headed for a lovely lunch and the start of a great weekend.

This Saturday’s Lotto jackpot is an estimated €7m.
