An 11-year-old boy died after his mother's car got stuck in the sand in Death Valley for five days during a camping trip.
San Bernardino County sheriff's officials said the boy and his 28-year-old mother set out for an overnight trip to Death Valley on August 1, but were stranded when their car got stuck about 20 miles east of Trona.
They had no mobile phone service and quickly consumed the bottles of water, Pop Tarts and cheese sandwiches they had packed.
Their car was found yesterday after police reported them missing.
The mother told rescuers her son died the day before. She was being treated at a Las Vegas hospital.
The average August temperature in Death Valley is 50C (122F).
