Sinn Féin are to protest at the Green Party meeting in Dublin today to put pressure on the party to pull out of government without any further delay.

The Greens are to pass a verdict on the Taoiseach Brian Cowen's explanation of dealings he had with the former Anglo chairman, Seán Fitzpatrick.

Last night, Mr Cowen insisted the claims of impropriety by him were "without foundation".

Sinn Féin's Dublin City Councillor Dessie Ellis said: "Brian Cowen’s Government is like a wounded bear, staggering from one crisis to another. We need a new government with a new approach and to give the people a chance of a new start with a general election now."

In a statement, Mr Cowen said: "The continued attempts to suggest Government banking policy was influenced by political or any inappropriate considerations is utterly without foundation."

The Taoiseach said he is quite clear no discussions took place about Anglo during the game of golf and dinner with Mr Fitzpatrick.

Mr Cowen will face Opposition questions when the Dáil returns tomorrow.
