An Australian grandmother is spending her life savings on facelifts for dogs.

Amanda Booth has decided to donate $16,400 a year to pay for the surgery for as many Shar Pei dogs as possible.

The designer pooches are bred especially to have floppy folds of skin around their faces, and many are dumped when their owners find out they have to pay around $2,000 for an operation to prevent deformities.

Kind-hearted Amanda said: "Some breeders are simply failing in their duty to warn prospective owners of some of the veterinary and personality problems associated with the ancient Chinese breed."
