Government is the place to be, says Labour Minister of State

A Labour Minister of State has said that he would be "devastated" if his party is not in Government after the General Election.

It comes after Minister Alan Kelly said yesterday that power is "obviously a drug… I think it suits me".

Aodhan O'Riordain said that he would not have a chance to exert influence from the Opposition benches.

"Power and being in Government is the place to be," he said.

"And for all the controversies we've had over the last five years, and difficulties that we've had, Government is still the only place to be to achieve anything.

"And to be quite frank about it, if I was to get elected, back to represent Dublin North, I would be delighted, but if we weren't in Government, I'd be devastated because I think the next five years would be difficult to be in the Dáil and not have a chance to influence something for the better."
