Gunmen killed 18 passengers travelling on a bus in north-western Pakistan today, police said.

The incident happened in the remote mountainous village of Harban Nala in Kohistan district.

Police officer Mohammad Azhar says the bus was travelling to Gilgit when the gunmen attacked and shot the passengers.

The motive for the attack was unclear but in the past Sunni extremists have killed Shia Muslims in that part of Pakistan.

Kohistan is about 211 miles north west of the capital Islamabad.
