The country's largest union has called for the re-introduction of price controls on drink.

SIPTU said there are glaring examples of resumed profiteering in the industry since the last price freeze was lifted and these are driving up inflation.

Union president Des Geraghty said it is important that the government takes effective action in either price controls or liberalisation of the whole trade.

"It is obvious that the drinks trade is not prepared to control the price of drink," he said.
