An 11-year-old boy accused of stabbing a nine-year-old girl in a cinema car park will not stand trial for the alleged crime.

The Crown Office said the case had been referred to the Children's Panel, which has the power to detain children in a secure unit or place them in the care of social services.

The boy was arrested following an incident outside the Fountainpark cinema complex in Dundee Street, Edinburgh, in October last year, in which a girl was allegedly stabbed several times with a knife.

A Crown Officer spokesman said: "The case has been passed on to the Reporter to the Children's Panel."

Neither the boy nor the girl can be named for legal reasons.
