Voting is continuing today in Zimbabwe's crucial presidential elections amid suggestions polling could be extended by two days to ensure voters get the opportunity to cast their ballots.
The polls were due to close this evening, with counting beginning tomorrow and the result expected late Tuesday or on Wednesday, depending on the turnout.
But, in the face of the opposition's complaints that their vote was being affected by the slow work of polling officials in their urban strongholds, the country’s Minister for Justice yesterday insisted that everyone who wanted to vote would be able to do so.
President Robert Mugabe faces his strongest challenge in 22 years of power from the leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai.
However, Mr Mugabe’s campaign has been marked by allegations of voter intimidation and violence by his supporters.
