At least 25 people have been killed and more than 1,000 injured in two days of violent rainstorms in northern Bangladesh.

Local reports said at least 15,000 houses were destroyed by the rains, which also damaged rice crops in the farming region.

Officials in Gaibandha district, which was hardest-hit, said 10 people were killed and more than 300 injured, while newspapers quoted officials as saying that another 15 people were killed and 1,000 injured in neighbouring districts.

The reports said most of the deaths were caused by collapsed houses or lightning and there are fears that the death toll could rise as many of the injured were taken to hospital in critical condition.

The Sangbad newspaper in the capital, Dhaka, also reported at least 7,000 homeless villagers camped on highways waiting for food and water.
