Annan considers scrapping UN Jenin mission

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is considering disbanding the UN fact-finding mission to the West Bank town of Jenin, a senior UN official said tonight.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is considering disbanding the UN fact-finding mission to the West Bank town of Jenin, a senior UN official said tonight.

The move comes after Israel’s security cabinet decided not to co-operate with the fact-finding team because its demands regarding the composition and mandate of the team were not met.

UN Undersecretary General Kieran Prendergast told the UN security council today: "A thorough,

credible and balanced report on recent events in Jenin refugee camp would not be possible without the co-operation of the government of Israel".

He added: "Since it appears from today’s cabinet statement by Israel that the difficulties in the way of deployment of the fact-finding team will not be resolved any time soon, the Secretary General is minded to disband the team."
