Telecommunications firms who breach the terms of their licences could soon face fines of up to €4m as part of the Communications Regulation Bill, which is currently before the Dáil.
Under the Bill, the maximum fine for breach of licence would be raised from €1,900 to €4m or 10% of the company’s turnover - whichever is greatest.
The Bill would also restrict telecommunications firms from digging up roads to lay cables.
