Govt urged to pitch in on Letterkenny hospital repairs

Fianna Fáil is calling on the Government to assist with the recovery bill at Letterkenny General Hospital.

The hospital's A&E department was severely flooded on Friday last after the nearby River Swilley burst its banks during torrential downpours.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue, who are set to meet with hospital management today, say emergency funding needs to be made available to the hospital in order to reopen fully.

Deputy McConalogue said while questions need to be answered as to how the flooding occurred, it is vital the hospital's emergency department reopens quickly.

"I think there are serious questions to be asked in terms of how this actually happened," he said.

"The HSE currently has two investigations (into the cause of the flooding) but I think the priority at the moment has to be getting our health services back up and running (and) ensuring that our hospital is not out of action for any longer than it has to be."
