A human stampede left 11 people dead, including eight children, and injured 25 other people after thousands raced into a bullfighting ring yesterday at an annual festival in Venezuela.
At least 24,000 people crushed into the Plaza Monumental in north-western city of Valencia, 120 miles west of Caracas.
The stampede occurred after police fired shots into the air and ushers opened the gates, said Carabobo State Governor Henrique Salas Romer.
Police were trying to disperse the crowd, which was becoming restless after hours of waiting to enter the International Festival of Valencia.
Some people had begun climbing over the gates, said Omar Bravo of Valencia newspaper Noti-Tarde.
