The level of drink-driving in Ireland is not decreasing, according to a report commissioned by the Government.

The Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition set a target for a 20% reduction in road fatalities in its 1998-2002 road safety strategy, but the leaked report says this strategy has failed.

While the number of road deaths last year was 13% less than in 1997, the figures for the first half of this year show an increase in fatalities.

The report also shows that around 91% of blood and urine samples and 82% of breath specimens tested last year were above the legal drink-driving limit.
