District Court gets first female president

The first ever female President of the District Court was sworn in today.

The first ever female President of the District Court was sworn in today.

Her Honour Judge Miriam Malone took up duty following a public declaration in the Supreme Court.

The constitutional declaration was made in the presence of Chief Justice John Murray and other members of the Court.

President Malone, who is married with two children, is a native of Dublin and was educated in UCD and the King’s Inns.

She practised as a barrister in the capital where she dealt mainly with criminal matters and civil cases before her ascension to the bench.

Ms Malone was appointed a judge of the District Court in March 1997 and dealt across all areas of work associated with the court.

As President she will be in charge of the organisation of 54 judges in 45 districts across the country – dealing with 550,000 matters each year.
