A French far-right politician has been pelted with a custard pie by a European Parliament secretary during a chaotic anti-fascist demonstration.

National Front MEP Jean-Claude Martinez's suit was splattered by the missile as a press conference for French presidential hopeful Jean-Marie Le Pen descended into farce.

Le Pen was forced to abandon plans to speak to the press in Brussels after he was shouted down by protesters in the parliament.

Mr Le Pen had turned up for a routine meeting determined to take part in a debate on the Middle East crisis.

MEPs were ready with banners proclaiming "Le Pen - Non" and booed as he rose in the chamber to condemn Middle East violence and berate his own country and the rest of the EU for following the US' stance on the region.

Chaos erupted when MEPs crowded a packed press conference determined to protest when Mr Le Pen appeared.

Instead, his colleague Mr Martinez entered the room, announcing that Mr Le Pen was not prepared to before a stage-managed "wall" of opponents, and was hit by the pie.
