Tullett on track for Olympics

World 1,500 metres bronze-medallist Hayley Tullett starts a busy weekend tonight when she runs in the Paris IAAF Golden League meeting.

Tullett, one of the most consistent British performers in the last couple of years, will be chasing a first ever Golden League victory.

She will not find it easy but at least she will know how to react and not be overawed by the 50,000 spectators expected to pack the Stade de France.

There were even more present last summer when Tullett achieved the finest performance of her career when she finished third.

“It took time to sink in. Everything that happened in those few minutes was a blur,” admitted Tullett, who ran a time of three minutes, 59.95 seconds which only British record holder Kelly Holmes has bettered.

Tonight, Tullett, her Olympic preparations interrupted by injury, will be hoping to add to her global reputation with a victory ahead of a very strong field.

Mozambique’s Maria Mutola, the reigning Olympic 800m champion, planning to double in Athens next month is expected to lead the challenge.

And the presence of top Russian Yelena Sergeyeva might see Tullett have to smash her Welsh record to be assured of victory.

This time last year, Tullett was considering retirement if she did not do herself justice at world level.

But her unexpected bronze medal now sees the part-time schoolteacher considered a serious contender in Athens next month.

“Please don’t put me under pressure with talk of that,” has been Tullett’s response that she can again claim another podium place.

Whatever the result this evening, Tullett will move directly to Birmingham to compete in the Norwich Union International meeting on Sunday.

Two races in less than 48 hours will replicate the qualifying rounds she will have to subject her body to before a rest day and the final in the Greek capital.

Jo Pavey misses racing over 3,000m, although recovered from injury, while Phillips Idowu – like the 5,000m specialist – a finalist at the last Olympics, takes on world triple jump champion, Christian Olsson.
