Celtic football legend Bobby Murdoch has died after suffering a stroke, it was announced today.

Celtic football legend Bobby Murdoch has died after suffering a stroke, it was announced today.

The 56-year-old, who was part of the legendary Lisbon Lions team, died peacefully in Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow at around 5am today. His family was at his side.

Murdoch was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and fell into a coma.

He was capped 12 times by Scotland and joined the Parkhead club in 1959.

He was a key figure in Celtic’s European Cup winning side of 1967, which earned the conquering team the Lisbon Lions name.

He later played for Middlesbrough and went on to coach the English club.

A spokeswoman for the Victoria Infirmary said: ‘‘Bobby Murdoch died peacefully with his family at his side earlier this morning.’’

Bobby is survived by his wife Kathleen, his two sons Robert and Barry, his daughter Kathleen and four grandchildren.
