Taoiseach promises to get best deal possible for farmers

The Taoiseach says the Government will do all it can to get the best deal possible for Irish farmers in the mid-term review of the Common Agricultural Policy and world trade talks.

The Taoiseach says the Government will do all it can to get the best deal possible for Irish farmers in the mid-term review of the Common Agricultural Policy and world trade talks.

Mr Ahern told the AGM of the Irish Farmers Association however that there are real limits on what can be provided by Government to domestic agriculture in an expenditure context.

The Taoiseach said the Government has no intentions to lose the gains made in the Agenda 2000 talks.

"Looking forward our negotiating position will be based on protecting the gains of Agenda 2000.

"That is where I started and I would stick hard and fast to that theory today, ensuring the best ongoing level of effort for Irish agriculture and protecting our production base, especially in the livestock and dairy sectors."
