Housemates prepare for life without Spencer

The Big Brother housemates were today adjusting to life without the latest evictee, laid-back love interest Spencer Smith.

The Big Brother housemates were today adjusting to life without the latest evictee, laid-back love interest Spencer Smith.

The 22-year-old from Cambridge became the fourth housemate to be voted out after bookmakers suspended all bets on him following a stream of bets favouring him for eviction.

Spencer, whose flirtation with fellow housemate Kate Lawler has gripped fans, remained calm on hearing he was voted out but Jade could be heard sobbing.

Kate admitted she had wanted Spencer to stay, and the programme’s website said he whispered ‘‘Promise to be very bad when I’m gone’’ as he hugged her goodbye.

But asked if he had fancied her, he said: ‘‘I liked Kate but I probably wouldn’t use the word fancy. I thought she was a nice girl.’’

He told presenter Davina McCall he would still take Kate to Scotland - an offer he made earlier in the series - but said he did not know if it would be as his girlfriend.

The ski shop assistant and part-time punt operator became an early favourite in the show, despite disclosures from housemates that he smelled, rarely washed and had athlete’s foot.

But this week he and male model Alex Sibley, 23, from Essex, were both put up for the public vote with four nominations each, in a contest labelled ‘‘battle of the boys’’.

Alex has now survived being nominated for two evictions and has replaced Spencer as the favourite to win the Channel 4 reality game show.

More than 2.6 million viewers took part in this week’s vote with Spencer getting more than 55% of the votes, and his departure leaves eight people remaining in the house.

Outside the house he was greeted by screams and chants from thousands of waiting fans, including one woman who threw her bra at him.

During his interview with presenter Davina McCall he said he had grown to like his rival Alex but was shocked he was nominated.

‘‘I was a little bit surprised, I couldn’t think of anything I did wrong,’’ he said.

He was then shown the housemates who had nominated him, Adele, Alex, Sophie and Jonny but seemed to have little to say about his former colleagues, telling Davina it had been a good experience.

Bookmaker William Hill issued new odds on the remaining housemates, with Alex odds-on favourite to win at 4-9.

Jonny was 3-1, Adele 6-1, Kate 12-1 and PJ, Sophie, Tim and any other newcomer all sharing odds of 16-1.

Jade plummeted in the bookmaker’s league, becoming the rank outsider to win at 33-1.

Mature student Lynne was the first to be evicted, followed by Alison and Lee. Two housemates, Sunita and Sandy, chose to leave and have been replaced.
