Southampton have completed the £3.5million signing of Ecuador’s Agustin Delgado from Mexican club Necaxa.

The striker has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at the Friends Provident St Mary’s Stadium.

Delgado has had a minor knee clean-up operation, which has gone smoothly, and will be available for selection once he has recovered from surgery.

Chairman Rupert Lowe said: ‘‘We are delighted to have completed the signing of a recognised, international-quality forward.

‘‘His knee required minor surgery, which has gone according to plan, and hopefully he will be a major success for Southampton.’’

Delgado, 26, has scored 29 international goals in just 42 appearances for Ecuador which has left his country on the brink of World Cup qualification.

His stock raised when he scored the winning goal against Brazil in a World Cup qualifier back in March 2001 the first time ever that Ecuador had defeated the former world champions.

He also played for Necaxa in the recent World Club championship against Manchester United and scored twice against Real Madrid.

The 6ft 3ins, 14 stone player has a huge physical presence, and is on paper well-suited to English football.
