Rowdy college students given sweets to keep quiet

UK Police officers have bought 10,000 sweets to hand out to students to remind them to keep the noise down when returning home from a night out.

UK Police officers have bought 10,000 sweets to hand out to students to remind them to keep the noise down when returning home from a night out.

The confectionery have the words "Quiet Please" and "Shush" on them to encourage partygoers in Durham, north east England, to tone the volume down following complaints by local residents.

Inspector Paul Anderson of Durham Police told the Mail on Sunday newspaper: "The idea of handing out sweets or lollipops at the end of the night has been done in other areas, but we think Durham is the first to include a message aimed at those who might otherwise make a racket.

"Late-night noise is a genuine issue for a number of our residents and we hope that this initiative will make a difference."
