The former editor of The Irish Examiner, Brian Looney, has resigned his position as Fine Gael's communications director - barely two months after joining the party as a key advisor to Michael Noonan.

Mr Looney confirmed last night his sudden departure and said it was a "personal decision".

He refused to comment on speculation that there had been a policy clash with party personnel close to the leader.

Sources indicate he had a positive relationship with Michael Noonan.

It is believed a number of publicity ideas made by the former journalist were rejected.

Fine Gael's press officer Niall O'Muilleoir had "no comment" when contacted today about the resignation.
