Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia held their nerve on the last hole to give Europe a commanding 11-5 lead going into the final day of singles at the 35th Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills.
Minutes earlier Padraig Harrington and Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley were in sparkling form as they beat Tiger Woods and Davis Love III in the foursomes.
Harrington and McGinley lost the first two holes but did not lose another hole.
McGinley brought the end by spinning his approach to the 15th back to six feet and, to the cheers of the Irish contingent in the crowd, Harrington finished it off for a sweet 4 and 3 win.
"It feels great not to have to go to the 18th," said McGinley, as a chorus of "Olé" sprang around Oakland Hills 15th hole. "It's a proud day for Ireland, a proud day for everybody."
Before that, Darren Clarke had the Irish in high spirits as he and Lee Westwood trounced Chris DiMarco and Jay Haas.
Phil Mickelson and David Toms have secured a foursomes points for the US to give them hope, but Europe now have a six point lead going into the singles and require just three more points to secure the trophy, and three and a half to win outright.
