Britain hands over Dublin and Monaghan documents

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has told the Dail that British authorities have handed over an "enormous" amount of files relating to the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

The documents were delivered to Mr Justice Henry Barron, who is investigating the loyalist bombings, which left 33 people dead.

Relatives of those killed in the attacks have been lobbying for months for Britain to hand over all its files relating to the atrocities.

They accused the British authorities of deliberately stalling the inquiry, fuelling long-held suspicions that the British security sources colluded with the loyalists who carried out the bombings.

Mr Ahern also told the Dail this morning that, despite the huge amount of material handed over, a preliminary trawl of the documents by Justice Barron suggested that more files are still needed before he can deliver an interim report.
