Labour to call for suspension of e-voting

The Labour Party is to call for the suspension of electronic voting in Ireland later today.

The Government is planning to introduce the system nationwide following trials in a number of constituencies during last year’s general election and the second referendum on the Nice Treaty.

The trials showed that electronic voting was easy to use and produced quick results, but the Labour Party has claimed it has evidence showing that the system was open to abuse.

A report due to be published by the party this afternoon says electronic voting machines can be tampered with and the software used in them can be unreliable.

Labour said it would produce evidence that electronic voting had been abused in other countries and added that the system should not be introduced in Ireland until proper safeguards were put in place.
