Wenger: FIFA's player restriction plan is a farce

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has criticised a suggestion by FIFA’s medical chief to limit the number of games in a season for each player as a “farce”.

Wenger contrasted the reported comments of Professor Jiri Dvorak with the announcement by the world governing body of the dates for this summer’s Confederations’ Cup international friendly tournament.

Worried about top players taking part in up to 70 games a season, Dvorak told the Observer: “Guidelines on the number of games that players may play in a season would benefit them by keeping them as healthy as possible.

“There are rules about the maximum number of hours per day that you can drive a truck but there are no rules for footballers.”

However, Wenger insisted: “I have just read that FIFA have organised the dates for the Confederations Cup to take place in June. So that is happening during the players’ holidays.

“I just don’t see it. One day, their doctor is saying that the players are playing too many games and, the next, the same body are organising another tournament.

“It’s a very good joke, quite funny. In fact, it’s a good comedy, a farce.”

Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira recently claimed to be exhausted by his frantic schedule of games before later insisting he had made the comment in the heat of the moment after two matches in four days.

Wenger, who was speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League tie tomorrow at PSV Eindhoven, added: “We are professionals and it’s not our job to decide whether we are playing too many games.

“That’s up to the people who go to the grounds to decide, it is whether they do not turn up any more as they believe the quality is falling.”

The Arsenal boss was rather more supportive about another FIFA plan to forbid any appeals against one-match suspensions and to ensure that bans start the following weekend.

“I don’t have a problem with that. If you cannot appeal, then you should serve your suspension straight away,” he added.
