'Gambling addict' solicitor surrenders passport
A solicitor who gambled away €2.4m of clients' money on stocks and shares has agreed to hand over his passport.
Guairá O'Callaghan, aged 39, who is part of the family firm of Sean O'Callaghan Company in Phibsboro, Dublin, has had his practicing certificate suspended.
His brother and partner in the firm Cormac O'Callaghan notified the Law Society of the financial irregularities last month.
The company's total deficit may be €4.3m.
The law society wants an independent accountant to investigate the firm to see whether it is viable for Cormac O'Callaghan to recoup the losses by continuing on in the practice.
The High Court has heard his suspended brother Guairá has agreed to hand in an affidavit outlining his assets and to hand in his passport to ensure he doesn't leave the jurisdiction.
