Sixteen people, including a child, had to be rescued from a burning block of flats in Dublin today after fire broke out in the building.

The 16, all foreign nationals, were rescued by firemen from a third-storey window when the blaze engulfed the downstairs lobby of the building on Ormond Quay, near Capel Street Bridge, at about 2pm.

Ten adults and the child have been taken to St James Street hospital, where it is thought they are being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Seven units of the fire brigade were needed to bring the blaze under control.

The cause is not yet known but one fireman described the incident as "a close call".
