Taoiseach Brian Cowen has strongly rejected claims by Fine Gael's Richard Bruton who accused him of trying to pre-empt the banking inquiry.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has strongly rejected claims by Fine Gael's Richard Bruton who accused him of trying to pre-empt the banking inquiry.

In a statement this morning, a spokesperson for the Taoiseach said the banking inquiry is independent of the Government and defended Mr Cowen's role as Finance Minister at the time.

Mr Cowen last night launched a robust defence of his handling of the banking crisis.

Addressing the North Dublin Chamber of Commerce, Mr Cowen did admit, however, that tax incentives which fuelled the property bubble should be been abolished.
