Redknapp maintains Morrison pursuit

Southampton manager Harry Redknapp has not given up hope of signing Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison.

Southampton manager Harry Redknapp has not given up hope of signing Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison.

The Premiership club have confirmed bids from Crystal Palace and Norwich for the Republic of Ireland international, and the Saints are adamant they are still in the chase.

Redknapp told his club’s official website www.saintsfc.co.uk: “I am hoping we still have a chance of getting him. The chairman is working on it and that’s all you can ask.”

The former West Ham boss added, in contradiction to Birmingham: “Norwich are the only ones who have agreed a fee but I don’t think he wants to go there or else they could not settle terms.

“I have not spoken to him yet because we have not had a bid accepted. But I am hoping that will change.

“I would not say we were favourites (to sign Morrison). I believe we have made a similar offer to Palace and if it is accepted then I can speak to him and try to persuade him to come here.

“The good thing is we are still in there and still trying. The chairman is working on it and I am hoping we can get him. I still feel we need another striker and wide man who can keep the ball and help us pass it.”

Morrison is likely to struggle for first-team football at St Andrews with Emile Heskey, Mikael Forssell and Walter Pandiani also competing for the two forward positions.

In World Cup year, the 26-year-old may feel a move to the Championship will at least ensure he is playing regularly.
